The Four Sacred Medicines

Tobacco
Tobacco is our sacred medicine of the East. It
was the first of all the medicines given to us by the Creator. Tobacco is used as an offering with our prayers and it is offered to Creation before we take anything from it.

Sage is our sacred medicine which comes from the West. Sage is a purifier and it s used for cleanings spaces, sacred items and our homes of unwanted energies. Sage is recognized as the woman's medicine and is used in preparing people for ceremonies by burning sage and smudging with sage we are washing away our troubling thoughts along with negative energy.

Sweetgrass is our sacred medicine of the South. Sweetgrass represents the hair of Mother Earth. When the sweetgrass strands are braided they symbolize the interconnectedness of our mind, body and spirit. Sweetgrass is used to smudge and purifying our mind, body, and spirit it is also used in cultural arts, basket making and quill boxes. When burned sweetgrass omits a sweet smelling scent.

Cedar is our sacred medicine that comes from the North. Cedar is a protection medicine. People hang cedar above their main entrance or place cedar in their shoe to ward off negative energies. It is used in ceremonies such as fasting, sweatlodge and cedar baths. Cedar's medicinal properties make it widely used for making tea in the recouperation process of becoming ill.
